A 24-year-old man was Sunday arrested after he allegedly hit and killed his mother in an argument over money in Mtaro village, Samburu County.

Police said the man had asked his mother, Alice Munesi Leparuiya, 50, for money when an argument broke out.

Witnesses said the woman told her son she did not have the money he wanted. The suspect, the fifth child of the deceased, then became violent and started assaulting her.

She attempted to run for her life, but the son allegedly hit her on the right side of her rib, causing her to fall to the ground and succumb to the injuries shortly after.

The suspect was later arrested by a mob and handed over to the police.

Police said the body was moved to Samburu County Referral Hospital, awaiting a postmortem. The man is expected in court to face murder charges.

In a separate incident in Gambogi, Vihiga County, Geoffrey Sare, 29, succumbed to injuries after being assaulted by a man known to him.

Police said he sustained neck injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he died on August 23. They are pursuing the suspect to face murder charges, pending an autopsy.

In Musikoma area, Bungoma County, the body of a man was found by the roadside after a suspected murder.

Police believe the killing occurred elsewhere and the body was dumped at the scene.

The motive was not immediately established following the Sunday incident in Milele village.

The body was discovered with blood oozing from the nose, and a cigarette with two half-smoked rolls of bhang were recovered at the scene.

It was moved to the mortuary pending postmortem and further investigations.

Murder cases have been on the rise despite efforts to address the trend.

Police say up to eight cases are reported daily, and a homicide unit has been formed to deal with them.
