Police arrest one suspect, reassures Nairobians of safety after Nanak House incident

Police said the incident was a deliberate attack believed to be linked to an internal dispute.

The National Police Service (NPS) has reassured the public of their safety following concerns raised by a local media report on insecurity in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

In a press statement issued from the National Police Service Headquarters, the NPS addressed what was described as a “worrying state of insecurity within the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi.”

This follows an incident that occurred on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Nanak House.

On Friday, goons broke into city shops and businesses along Kimathi Street in Nairobi's CBD. 

Armed goons allegedly broke into their shops in broad daylight and stole items.

Police revealed that one arrest has already been made as investigations are ongoing, and further arrests and progress are expected.

“The National Police Service wishes to assure the public that Nairobi Central Business District remains one of the most secure areas in which to conduct business,” Director Corporate Communication NPS Muchiri Nyaga said.

“Its status as a symbol of the capital city cannot be overemphasised. Furthermore, the general state of security across the country remains commendably good, a result of the efforts executed on a daily basis alongside the invaluable support of the public.”

According to the statement, detectives investigating the matter have “ascertained certain facts.”

The police confirmed that the attack on four businesses within the building was a deliberate attack believed to be linked to an internal dispute.

The police in the statement said the matter is already before the court.

"The National Police Service wishes to assure the public that Nairobi CBD is one of the most secure areas in which to conduct business," Nyaga said.

It attributed isolated incidents like the Nanak House case to internal disputes that do not reflect the general state of security.

The NPS urged the public to remain calm and to continue partnering with law enforcement.
