Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a crackdown on criminal gangs re-emerging in parts of Central Kenya.

The gangs, which have reportedly resumed operations of extortion, harassment, and political alignment, are being blamed for rising insecurity and fear among locals.

Speaking during the Kiambu chapter of the Jukwaa la Usalama security engagement forum at the County Commissioner’s office, Murkomen issued a stern warning to the gangs.

“These criminal gangs are thriving because of political influence. They are extorting locals and seeking cover from politicians. They will not be spared," he said.

The CS made it clear that the government will not tolerate the resurgence of organised criminal groups and said law enforcement agencies will target ring leaders for arrest and prosecution.

“It will not be business as usual,” he warned.

“These are the same groups mobilised for demonstrations. We are going to be firm in our approach.”

Murkomen called on the Judiciary and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to continue playing their part to ensure justice is served and the security sector remains effective.

He also raised alarm over the increasing number of foreigners in Kiambu County who are allegedly engaging in illegal activities, sometimes in collaboration with local gangs.

“We will deport such individuals back to their countries. We cannot allow lawlessness to flourish,” he said.

The Interior CS emphasised the need for a collaborative approach to security, urging communities, local leaders, and enforcement agencies to work together.

“The resurgence of these gangs, especially in urban slums, poses a direct threat to national security. We will make arrests and prosecute them for extortion and related crimes,” he affirmed.

Addressing land-related fraud, Murkomen revealed that the Ministry of Lands is actively working on solutions, indicating that the issue remains a top concern for the government.

The government’s intensified security operations come amid growing public concern over deteriorating safety in key urban centers, where gangs are allegedly operating with impunity.
