Former Chief Justice David Maraga has condemned violence against journalists who were attacked while covering the homecoming of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua along Mombasa Road.
In a statement on Thursday, Maraga said freedom of the press and the right of citizens to assemble are guaranteed under the Constitution and must be protected at all times.
“I strongly condemn the use of violence against citizens and journalists during the return of the former Deputy President from his visit to the United States,” Maraga said.
The incident occurred when a section of Gachagua’s supporters clashed with groups opposed to him, leading to chaos along Mombasa Road.
Journalists covering the procession were caught in the fracas, with some sustaining injuries.
Maraga expressed concern that failure to address such incidents could undermine Kenya’s democratic gains.
He urged leaders and security agencies to safeguard constitutional rights and ensure accountability.
“This is why I insist that we must urgently reset and restore our country to constitutionalism and the rule of law,” he said.
The former CJ has in the past spoken strongly on issues of governance and the rule of law, often urging political leaders to uphold constitutionalism.
Gachagua, who returned to the country after a visit to the United States, was received by supporters at JKIA.
