The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has announced it will field a single candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North Constituency parliamentary by-election, settling on the flagbearer through either consensus or party primaries.

In a statement issued on Friday via its official social media platforms, the party said Deputy President and UDA Deputy Party Leader Kithure Kindiki met all aspirants seeking the ticket, alongside immediate former MP Geoffrey Ruku and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who also serves as UDA Chairperson.

The aspirants are Leonard Muriuki, Murage Njagagua, Muriuki Njagagua, Justus Kariuki Mate, Konji Waya, Stephen Makindu Daniel Bongo.

"The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party will, by consensus or party primaries, settle on a single candidate to fly our flag in the upcoming by-election to elect the next Member of Parliament for Mbeere North Constituency," the statement read.

The meeting resolved to first pursue consensus in identifying the candidate, with competitive primaries as a fallback if no agreement is reached.

Leaders also agreed on a joint campaign programme to be rolled out once the nominee is unveiled, aiming to project party unity and mobilise grassroots support across the constituency.

The statement comes moments after announcing September 20, 2025, as the date for its party nominations ahead of the upcoming by-elections.

The party’s National Elections Board said the exercise will cover vacant seats in the National Assembly, the Senate and various County Assembly wards across the country.

“Notice is hereby given that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party nominations shall be held on 20th September 2025. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply for nomination by registering through the UDA party portal accessible at www.uda.ke.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said the upcoming byelections would commence on November 27, 2025.

The Commission said that it was guided by Article 259, which guides whenever constitutional timelines have passed.

It further noted that all by-elections, especially for Members of Parliament, had passed the set timelines.

In a notice, the electoral agency said the gazetting of the by-elections has been scheduled in two batches.

The commission said gazettement for 16 ward by-elections was done on Friday, August 8, alongside the appointment of Returning and Deputy Returning Officers who will conduct the polls.
