Chaos erupted at the Kericho County Assembly on Thursday, moments after MCAs voted to impeach Governor Erick Mutai for the second time in less than a year.
The tension, which had been building throughout the heated special sitting, boiled over shortly after the Speaker announced the final results.
Some 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favour of removal
MCAs from opposing camps stormed toward each other in angry confrontation, with some engaging in fist fights on the floor of the House.
Shouts and insults from some women MCAs filled the chamber as sergeants-at-arms struggled to restore order.
Videos seen by the Star showed members physically restraining one another while others exchanged harsh words.
The impeachment, tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accuses Governor Mutai of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.
The governor, who also faced impeachment in October 2024, now awaits a Senate hearing to determine whether he will be removed from office.
Despite a court order earlier in the week barring the assembly from debating the motion until a petition was heard, the MCAs proceeded, arguing that the people of Kericho deserved decisive leadership action.
Mutai has condemned the vote, calling it illegal and politically motivated, and vowed to fight the decision both in the Senate and in court.
