Motorists in Nairobi are on Thursday set to experience another major traffic disruption along the city’s key highways as the African Nations Championship (CHAN) resumes.

Some two matches are set to be played at the Kasarani stadium, with the highlight of the day being that of Harambee Stars taking on Angola.

In a traffic advisory issued by Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir, police have warned of major snarl-ups on various routes, advising motorists to keep off Thika road unless they are heading to Kasarani.

The Stars clash, which follows an earlier fixture between DR Congo and Zambia at 4pm at the same venue.

The matches come just days after the official kick-off of the CHAN tournament on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

To ensure the smooth movement of players, officials, and fans, and to bolster security around the match venues, several roads around Kasarani will be either partially restricted or fully closed.

Chirchir has outlined alternative routes and urged the public to plan and cooperate with traffic marshals.

Here are some of the roads to be closed.

Just as last Sunday, Aerodrome Road will be fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

Lang’ata Road will have one side closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Lusaka Roundabout.

Mombasa Road will be restricted on one side from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

To manage the expected heavy flow, the following alternative diversion routes have been provided.

Mombasa Road to CBD: Motorists are advised to use Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

Lang’ata Road to CBD: Drivers should divert to Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at the Mbagathi Roundabout.

The particular roads have been closed since Nyayo Stadium is one of the venues being used for the matches.

CBD to Thika, Ruiru, Juja, and Thika Road: Use either Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.

Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should take the Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, Ngomongo Road, and head to Ngomongo Roundabout.

Thika Road-bound motorists are advised to opt for Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.

Several dignitaries, including the President, are expected to attend the match.
