Game on: Government gives CHAN stadiums a clean bill of health on security

The government has expressed satisfaction with security preparations at Kenya’s main venues for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), just days before the continental football tournament kicks off.

On Friday, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja led members of the National Security Council in inspecting Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to assess their readiness to host CHAN matches.

Also present during the tour were CECAFA secretary general and chairperson of the CHAN Local Organising Committee (LOC) Nicholas Musonye, LOC CEO Myke Rabar, KPS Director of Operations Adamson Bungei, his counterpart Jackson Kangani, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda, and police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, among other officials.

The delegation toured key sections of the stadiums, including changing rooms, operational zones, entry and exit points, and perimeter fencing.

“They expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness in terms of security, protocol, and logistical arrangements for the tournament participants,” said a statement issued after the inspection.

The month-long tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, kicks off on Saturday, August 2, and will run through to August 30.

Kenya will host the final at Kasarani Stadium, while Tanzania and Uganda will host the opener and third-place playoff, respectively.

Kenya is in Group A alongside the DRC, Zambia, Morocco and Angola.

Harambee Stars will go up against DR Congo in their opener on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium in the sold-out clash.

Several roads around the Kasarani area will be closed on match day. Motorists will be diverted to alternative routes.

Police have urged fans to arrive early and adhere to traffic and security guidelines.

The tournament, reserved for players competing in their national leagues, is expected to draw capacity crowds every time the home team will playing.

Football Kenya Federation on Friday released guidelines for stadium access and adviced fans to adhere to assigned entry gate to avoid confusion and uneccessary delays. 

Tickets are available online via chan.mookh.com. There will be no ticket sales at the entrace, fans are advised to purchase in advance.
