
Silas Jakakimba has been appointed to the Council of
Kirinyaga University, marking a new chapter in his public service career.
His appointment was officially announced in a gazette notice
dated July 25, 2025, by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba.
Jakakimba, a lawyer and former aide of ODM leader Raila
Odinga, joins three other individuals, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina
Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga, as new members of the university
council.
The appointments, made under Section 36(1)(d) of the Universities Act (No. 42 of 2012), are effective for a term of three years, commencing on 25th July 2025.
The appointments aim to strengthen governance structures
across public universities in Kenya, to enhance institutional
oversight, academic integrity, and strategic direction.
Council members play a crucial role in the governance of
public universities, including the approval of policies, oversight of budgets, and
steering long-term institutional objectives in collaboration with the
university administration.
Kirinyaga University, one of Kenya’s newer public
institutions of higher learning, has been experiencing significant growth in recent
years.
Kirinyaga University, which was awarded a charter in 2016,
has steadily grown into a centre of excellence in science, technology, and
innovation.
The new council is expected to provide strategic leadership,
help attract resources, and oversee policy formulation and compliance in line
with the institution’s vision and national education priorities.
In parallel appointments, Kisii University has welcomed Dr.
Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Rev. Prof. Peter Mageto, and Dr. Mwenda Makathimo as new
council members, as per Gazette Notice No. 10101.
University of Eldoret saw both reappointments and new
entries. Dr. Peter Onchari Kereri was reappointed to the council (Gazette
Notice No. 10102), while Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia were
appointed as new members (Gazette Notice No. 10103).
At Murang’a University of Technology, four new council
members were appointed: Allan Mugambi Michael, Amran Mohamed Ali, Getrude
Chemutai Kurgat, and Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo (Gazette Notice No. 10106).
