Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, has died.
He died while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
News of his passing broke on Tuesday morning, sparking a wave of shock and grief among fans and fellow creatives.
His death was announced by fellow comedian Kafengo.
“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki A.k.a Mr Kk Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
"During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers, to the family and friends, may god give us strength at these difficult times. May His Soul Rest in Peace,” he wrote on Facebook.
He was widely celebrated for his
witty impersonations of Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and had built
a large following on social media through his sharp political satire.
While the cause of death had not been officially disclosed at the time of reporting, tributes poured in across platforms, acknowledging his unique role in Kenya’s comedy and political commentary space.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah was
among the first public figures to mourn the comedian, describing him as a
courageous artist whose work transcended laughter.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of
the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and
talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,”
Omtatah said in a statement shared Monday.

courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to
awaken, educate, and unite. His ability to capture the political moment with
sharp wit and authenticity was both refreshing and powerful.”
He added that the country had not
only lost a comedian but also “a cultural commentator and a brave young
patriot.”
“My heartfelt condolences go out to
his family, friends, and the entire creative community. May his soul rest in
peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity in those he
leaves behind. Fare thee well, Mr. KK Mwenyewe,” Omtatah said.
Mr. KK gained prominence for his
low-budget skits that humorously reimagined the Deputy President’s speech
patterns and mannerisms. Despite the satire, his content was widely seen as
respectful and reflective of broader social realities.
Fans and colleagues described him as
humble, intelligent, and deeply committed to his craft. His passing comes at a
time when he was considered one of the rising stars in Kenyan online comedy.
