
President William Ruto has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
In a statement issued on Monday, President Ruto described Buhari as a towering African statesman whose influence and legacy went beyond Nigeria’s borders.
"The demise of President Buhari is a loss not only to the people of Nigeria but also to the entire African continent. His wisdom and unwavering dedication to the liberation and prosperity of his people enriched all of Africa," Ruto stated.
He praised Buhari’s leadership, highlighting his resolute stand against corruption, commitment to regional security, and support for the continent’s economic integration agenda.
“President Buhari championed regional security efforts to combat terrorism and was a strong advocate for Africa’s unity and economic development,” Ruto said.
Ruto fondly recalled Buhari’s state visit to Kenya in January 2016, which he described as a key moment in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
He also noted Buhari’s congratulatory message following Kenya’s 2022 General Election, calling it a reflection of his deep respect for democracy and African solidarity.
“In this time of sorrow, Kenya stands with Nigeria. May President Buhari’s legacy continue to inspire our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across the continent,” Ruto affirmed.
He concluded by addressing Nigeria’s current leadership with a message of support: “Please accept, Your Excellency and Dear Brother, my sincere condolences and the assurances of my highest esteem.”
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023. His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from leaders across Africa and beyond, in recognition of his significant contributions to both Nigeria and the continent.
