Fortune Sacco Football Club head coach, Sylvester Odero, has died following a tragic road accident in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

The incident occurred early Monday morning when Odero’s vehicle veered off the road and plunged into River Kanaro at Kangiciri village.

Odero, who was also a teacher at Nyaikungu Secondary School, was driving at the time of the accident.

He was accompanied by Julius Mutiso, a sports officer from Kirinyaga County, who fortunately escaped unharmed.

According to police, the vehicle was headed towards Kagio from Ngurubani when Odero lost control near Kangiciri.

Kangiciri village elder David Mugane said residents were awakened by a loud crash at around 3 a.m.

Upon rushing to the scene, they found Mutiso crying for help near the river.

Local residents are now calling on the contractor working on the Ngurubani–Kangiciri road to install metal guardrails along the stretch near River Kanaro. They noted that this was not the first accident at the site.

News of Odero’s passing has sent shockwaves through the sports community in Kirinyaga. Fortune Sacco FC expressed their grief in a heartfelt message posted on social media:

“We are devastated, shocked, and heartbroken to confirm that our dear coach Sylvester Odero has passed away after a road accident. Out of words—such tragic news. Life is so unfair and unpredictable. Rest in peace, Chester.”

Odero, a licensed CAF B coach, took over as head coach in April 2025 following the resignation of Michael Etimong.

Beyond his coaching duties, he was known for his commitment to youth development and community empowerment through football.

Fortune Sacco FC, which competes in the National Super League, continues to mourn the loss of a dedicated leader and mentor.

Police have confirmed that the damaged vehicle was towed to Sagana Police Station for inspection as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
