Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has clarified that the united opposition has no presidential candidate or running mate, despite the talk of a possible 2027 line up.
Speaking on Wednesday, Kalonzo said the opposition is currently focusing uniting all like-minded leaders before settling on their candidate.
He insisted that at the right time, the opposition will present
its candidates to the people of Kenya.
The former Vice President said they believe there is enough space to accommodate everyone should they win the 2027 elections, hence the unity drive.
“I can tell you one thing with certainty, we do not as yet have a presidential candidate, and we do not have a presidential running mate. We are building a united opposition and at the opportune time we will give this country a presidential candidate and a running mate and there's enough space for all of us. Reformists, people who want to change this country for good,” Kalonzo said on TV47.
He rubbished reports that the united opposition had settled on him as their flag bearer and Democratic Action Party of Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa as the deputy presidential candidate.
“We haven’t discussed anything like that.”
The opposition outfit currently consists of Kalonzo, DCP's Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Justin Muturi (DP) and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
A core team of technocrats, legal minds and political strategists is evaluating possible flagbearers using a rigorous matrix that considers voter mobilisation capacity, regional influence, national appeal, political experience and projected voter contribution.
Topping the list of contenders are Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i — each bringing unique strengths but also carrying polarising baggage.
However, as the search for a flagbearer continues, the opposition faces a delicate balancing act; uniting fractured parties, managing egos, and confronting a youth-led political awakening that is reshaping the rules of engagement.
The outfit has had an array of tours to various parts of the country including Ukambani and the Mt Kenya region, the latest one being Western Kenya, where they camped for two days.
