Grade nine pupil dies by suicide in Trans Nzoia

Her body was found by her grandmother hanging inside their home.

At least seven cases of suicide were separately reported on July 1, 2025, to police in a continuing and worrying trend.

The deaths occurred in Trans Nzoia, Siaya, Kajiado, Nyeri, Meru, Kisumu, and Kisii counties.

In Trans Nzoia County, 18-year-old Marion Nekesa, a Grade 9 pupil at Tunen Primary School, was found by her grandmother hanging inside their home.

The young girl had returned home from school, and the grandmother discovered her body after attending a women’s gathering.

Her body was transferred to Kitale County Referral Hospital.

Kisumu County also recorded a suicide case involving 20-year-old Samuel Omondi Okal.

His body was found hanging from the rafters of his house using a black jacket in Kaswa village, Kochogo South.

His body was taken to Othoo Morgue as police launch investigations on the cause of death.

In Siaya County, police officers from Nyandorera Police Post were called to a homestead in Kamulanga “A” village on July 3, 2025, where they discovered the lifeless body of 34-year-old Dennis Oduor Ouma.

The deceased, who was working as a househelp, was found on his bed with whitish foam around his lips.

Authorities recovered empty bottles of Triatix and Steladone spray at the scene, which are suspected to have been ingested.

His body was taken to the Siaya County Referral Morgue awaiting autopsy as investigations continue.

Elsewhere in Nyeri County, a man identified as John Maina Ndegwa, aged 50, was found dead in his home in Kabiraini village on the night of July 2, 2025.

The deceased, a caregiver to a mentally ill relative, was discovered lying lifeless on his bed with several sachets of used pharmaceutical tablets beside him.

Bloody vomit was also found on his clothes and the floor, his body was moved to Nyeri County Referral Hospital Mortuary.

DCI Nyeri has launched an investigation.

Kitengela town in Kajiado County was also struck by tragedy when the body of 58-year-old Simon Ng'ang’a was discovered hanging from the roof truss of his mabati house.

The caretaker of the plot alerted police after a strong smell emanated from the room.

A suicide note was recovered, detailing his reasons and addressed to his wife and son.

The incident, dated June 30, 2025, is under investigation, and the body was transferred to Nairobi Funeral Home for postmortem.

In Kisii County, 45-year-old Samwel Obwocha Mwarenia was found hanging inside a semi-permanent house in Irianyi Location, Masaba South Sub-County.

Authorities report long-standing family disputes as a possible motive; his body was taken to St. Catherine's Ichuni Mission Hospital Mortuary.

Another incident was reported in Meru County, where a Kenya Wildlife Service officer, Victor Kibet Cherugut, was found hanging from a tree near the KWS staff quarters.

The incident occurred on July 2, 2025, and the officer is believed to have used a combination of galvanised wire and sisal rope.

The body was moved to Nyambene Level IV Hospital Morgue pending investigations.

Authorities across the affected regions have documented and processed all the scenes as investigations continue.

Mental health professionals are calling for increased awareness, support systems, and national intervention as Kenya continues to grapple with rising cases of suicide.
