President William Ruto has donated Sh1million to the family
of Boniface Mwangi to support them with funeral arrangements.
On behalf of the president, MPs Peter
Irungu Kihungi (Kangema), Mary Wamua (Maragua) and Betty Maina (County MP) conveyed the president’s condolences and gave out the
contributions.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, Kihungi noted
that he visited the home of the late Boniface Mwangi Kariuki to offer his
condolences and stand in solidarity with his grieving family.
“We spent time with the family, listened to their pain, and
assured them of our full support,” Kihungi said.
The MP noted that the key concern raised was the family’s
inability to record a statement with the police in the pursuit of justice.
“The representative from PS Raymond Omollo’s office committed to
following up immediately to ensure this process is facilitated without further
delay,” he said.
“We will not rest until justice is done,” he added.
Maina, in a statement on her Facebook page, mourned and described Boniface Mwangi Kariuki as a hardworking hawker.
“It is heartbreaking to lose a loved one under such painful and unjust circumstances, especially someone who was healthy, dedicated, and hustling to make an honest living,” Maina said.
“We must relentlessly pursue justice for Boniface while
calling on our police officers to exercise restraint and protect, not harm,
innocent Kenyans,” she added.
Hawker Bonface Mwangi Kariuki was shot at close range
during the June 17 demonstration in Nairobi.
He was put in the ICU at Kenyatta National Hospital since June 17, when he was shot in the city centre, but met his death on June, 30,2025.
Family spokesperson Emily Wanjira said he passed on Monday
at 3.15 pm.
An official at the hospital also confirmed he had died.
“It is true he passed on more than an hour ago. The family
will give you more details,” said the official.
Two police officers involved in the incident, caught on camera, are in custody as police investigate the matter.
