A 21-year-old man is recuperating at a hospital in Machakos after he was allegedly stabbed multiple times by a police officer in Yatta, Machakos county.

Titus Wambua is said to have been attacked by an Administration Police officer stationed at Kithimani in Yatta subcounty, in what is suspected to be a love triangle dispute on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, the officer used a kitchen knife to stab Wambua in the head, chest and back.

Witnesses further claimed that the officer found Wambua in a compromising situation with his lover at a house in the Kithimani area before launching the violent attack.

“The man was rushed to a private hospital by the same assailant. Locals later discovered what had transpired and attempted to lynch him, prompting fellow officers from Kithimani to intervene and whisk him away,” an eyewitness told the Star on Sunday, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisal.

The incident was reported at Kithimani police station.

Residents confronted the officers who responded at the private hospital, demanding that the suspect be handed over to them.

Tension mounted outside the facility as members of the public insisted on administering their own form of justice.

“Surrender the guy so we can ‘greet’ him properly,” a woman was heard shouting.

An armed plainclothes officer stood guard beside a police Land Cruiser as the suspect was extracted from the hospital.

The officer entered the vehicle, which then sped off.

The woman allegedly involved in the love triangle has since gone into hiding.

Wambua was later transferred to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for specialised treatment.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Wambua recounted the events: “I was out drinking with a woman I consider my lover in Kithimani township. We later went to bed. We didn’t lock the door, and the officer stormed in, stabbed me several times, then took me to the hospital.”

Area MCA Paul Muli condemned the incident and demanded swift action.

“The police officer should be arrested immediately and arraigned in court,” Muli said.

Following public outrage, the officer was later arrested and detained at Yatta police station.

He is expected to be arraigned at Kithimani Law Courts on Monday.
