Police officers from Kabete police station have recovered an AK-47 rifle stolen from Dagoretti police post during the June 25, demonstrations.
The recovery followed a tip-off about a suspicious individual carrying a bulging bag at a local bar in the Gahui area.
Acting swiftly, officers moved in and, with the aid of forensic leads, identified the suspect.
The investigation led them to the suspect's residence in Njuki-Kirigu.
However, the individual fled upon seeing the officers.
A search of his home, conducted in the presence of his mother, led to the discovery of the stolen AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a single round of 7.62mm special ammunition—all confirmed to have been taken from Dagoretti Police Post.
A manhunt is ongoing as police pursue new leads to apprehend the fugitive. #FichuaKwaDCI. Call 0800 722 203 to report anonymously. Usiogope!
On Thursday, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said criminals orchestrated coordinated attacks targeting police during the Gen Z-led demonstrations on June 25.
He revealed that criminals attacked police stations and posts aiming to seize firearms and police uniforms from armouries.
Murkomen confirmed that at least nine police stations were attacked—five of which were torched, including Dagoretti, Molo, and Ol Kalau—and that five firearms were stolen from Dagoretti police post.
He defended law enforcement, stating that officers displayed restraint amid extreme provocation and that the situation amounted to an attempted coup thwarted by their actions.
The CS reinforced that no force was excessive and urged national support for the police, who exposed and countered the conspirators who "bragged online" in stolen police uniforms.
Murkomen pledged government backing for the police, saying, “Even if you need a lawyer, I have your back," following growing public outrage over how police reacted to the protests.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Righst (KNCHR) said in its preliminary report that at least 19 people died in the chaos, 531 were injured while 15 were forcefully disappeared.
The commission further said it documented 179 arrests, two cases of individual rape, two cases of gang rape and one attempted gang rape.
It added that it will issue a more comprehensive statement at a later date.
