President William Ruto is attending the burial of Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro’s father, Mzee Mung’aro Senior, in Kilifi County.

Ruto’s visit comes on a day when Gen Z-led protests have erupted in several parts of the country, including the capital, Nairobi.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is also among the political leaders present at the funeral on June 25, 2025.

Raila has been at the Coast for the past two days, attending various events, including county functions, where on Tuesday he cautioned Gen Z protesters against resorting to violence.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, President Ruto flew to Kilifi after hosting His Highness Prince Rahim Al Hussaini Aga Khan’s envoy, Sultan Ali Allana, at State House, Nairobi.

“I have extended an invitation for His Highness the Aga Khan to visit Kenya for the signing of an agreement for the recognition of the Ismaili Imamat and the conferment of Kenya’s highest civil honour — the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.),” Ruto said.

“I appreciate the work undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Kenya, especially in health and education.”

In the capital, a heavy police presence was observed across Nairobi and other major towns as Kenyans took to the streets to commemorate the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests that left dozens dead and sparked nationwide outrage over police brutality.

Protesters in several towns joined the Gen Z-led demonstrations as the June 25 commemorations gained momentum across the country.

Wednesday’s events were marked by heightened security and restricted access to key parts of Nairobi.

Roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) were barricaded by dawn, with major routes such as Jogoo Road terminating at City Stadium, forcing commuters to walk into town.

Security was visibly tight around government installations.

Razor wire and heavily armed officers sealed off all approaches to the State House and Parliament, signalling a government on high alert following last year’s breach during the chaotic June 25 protests.
