After hours of calm, Murang’a town was plunged into chaos when scores of youths took to the streets in solidarity with nationwide demonstrations.
The protest began at 2 p.m., with the youths marching from Murang’a town to Mukuyu centre before heading back.
They chanted slogans and carried placards in memory of those who died during the anti-Finance Bill protests on June 25 last year.
Retailers, including supermarkets and other major outlets, were forced to shut down abruptly to avoid potential attacks.
The demonstrators lit several bonfires in town, as locals watched, cheered, took selfies, and posed for photos at roundabouts.
Anti-riot police arrived minutes later but initially kept their distance, silently observing as some protesters approached them for photos and played near the bonfires.
The group proceeded to the county headquarters and Murang’a police station, chanting songs before returning to the town centre.
Tensions escalated when police eventually intervened, leading to running battles.
Officers lobbed teargas canisters as protesters responded by hurling stones, effectively bringing the town to a standstill.
