  • “The launch was initially planned for Nairobi, but the state interfered with venue booking. I now ask the Maa community to host this important event in their region,” Gachagua said.
  • “I ask you to identify a private venue for the event,” he added. “This party belongs to you now. It’s your responsibility to find the venue, welcome the guests, and provide security.”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that he will officially launch his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) on July 7, 2025.

The date will coincide with the historical Saba Saba Day, remembered as the day when nationwide protests took place in 1990 to demand an end to one-party rule and the introduction of multi-party democracy.

Gachagua announced on Monday, June 23, during a meeting with over 500 grassroots mobilisers from the Maa community at his Wamunyoro residence.

He said the launch venue had been moved from Nairobi to the Maa region after the original booking was allegedly cancelled by the State.

“The launch was initially planned for Nairobi, but the state interfered with venue booking. I now ask the Maa community to host this important event in their region,” Gachagua said.

The request was met with loud cheers, as attendees raised their herding sticks in agreement.

"This DCP party is yours. I am requesting, if you agree, that the launch ceremony—which we had initially planned to hold in Nairobi—be held here among the Maa people instead. If you agree, will you do it?" Gachagua told the crowd.

He claimed that his previous political meetings in Nairobi were frequently disrupted by hired goons and expressed confidence that the Maa region would provide a safer, more welcoming environment.

“I ask you to identify a private venue for the event,” he added. “This party belongs to you now. It’s your responsibility to find the venue, welcome the guests, and provide security.”

"Now for this event, let a private venue be found, because you know, when we hold events among the Maa, [the government] is used to sending goons to disrupt us. But among the Maa, is there anyone who can ruin the event? Now DCP is your party, the event is yours — welcome the guests and secure the meeting."

"So to these leaders, I wanted to ask if you have agreed — and I thank you — then the event will be held on July 7."

The DCP faced a major logistical setback after the cancellation of its original launch venue at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.

The party had booked the venue for June 3, 2025, paying over Sh3.7 million to Sports Kenya.

Initially, the event was scheduled for June 4, but was rescheduled to June 3 due to venue availability. However, the booking was later revoked under unclear circumstances.
