Gachagua traversed several constituencies in Meru during his extensive visit, rallying locals to support the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a post on his X platform on June 23, 2025, Gachagua
expressed his gratitude to the region following what he described as one of his
most dramatic visits to the Mt Kenya region.
“Thank you, Meru, my brothers and sisters,” he captioned a photo showing large crowds that had turned up to welcome him.
The former DP arrived in Meru on Friday, June 20, accompanied by a host of local politicians. He showcased massive support and declared that Meru had turned against the Kenya Kwanza government ahead of the 2027 polls.
However, his tour was not without incident. Angry youths attempted to block his convoy from accessing several parts of the region before they were eventually overpowered.
Chaos erupted on June 21 in Tigania East, Meru County, along the Meru–Mikinduri highway after two rival political factions clashed ahead of Gachagua’s visit.
The mayhem began when a group of youths lit bonfires along the highway in an attempt to stop the convoy from holding a political rally in the area.
Videos and images shared online showed young men burning tyres along the road, paralysing transport and forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
As tensions escalated, another group of residents—believed to be local supporters of Gachagua—intervened and clashed with the group allegedly hired to disrupt the rally.
After several minutes of confrontation, the residents overpowered the goons, cleared the road, and paved the way for Gachagua’s convoy.
During the political gathering, a lawmaker allied to Gachagua accused a local politician of allegedly sponsoring the goons to disrupt the opposition rally.
Gachagua's rally coincided with President William Ruto’s official visit to Meru town on the same day, June 21, where he held a separate political gathering.
During his address, President Ruto hit out at his former deputy, accusing him of attempting to divide Kenyans.
On Sunday, Gachagua attended a church service at AIPCA St Mary’s Church in Ruiri/Rwarera Ward, Buuri Constituency, Meru County.
