Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has cautioned against turning the upcoming funeral of slain blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang' into a political platform.

The family is yet to set the date for the burial of the social media influencer, who died on June 7 while in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. DCI officers arrested Ojwang in Homa Bay and ferried him to Nairobi, allegedly for arraignment over false publication.

His death has sparked nationwide protests, with Kenyans demanding justice for the former teacher whose life was allegedly cut short over critical social media posts targeting Deputy Inspector General of Police, David Lagat.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the case and has since arrested several police officers. Lagat has also been interrogated, and other officers have already been arraigned in court.

In a heartfelt statement on Thursday, Kaluma said the family is preparing to lay their son to rest in a solemn ceremony focused on mourning and paying their final respects, not political posturing.

“We will soon lay our son, Albert Ojwang, to rest. It will be our funeral to mourn him and pay our last respects—not a forum for politics,” Kaluma said.

The legislator issued a stern warning to individuals he accused of politicising his son’s death, urging them to stay away from the burial.

“Please do not come if you played politics with the sad death of Albert,” he added.

Kaluma also expressed his gratitude to friends, constituents, and well-wishers who have supported the family during this difficult period.

“I say thank you to all those who have stood with the family during this dark time,” he said.

Details of the burial date and venue are expected to be announced in the coming days, following a donation of Sh3 million from President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The family had thanked the two leaders for standing with them following the death of their son.
