A major political showdown is looming in Embu County, with key political parties eyeing the Mbeere North parliamentary seat left vacant following Geoffrey Ruku's appointment as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.

Signalling the start of a titanic duel, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, alongside Devolution Empowerment Party chair Lenny Kivuti, jointly unveiled the Democratic Party’s (DP) candidate for the upcoming by-election.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, Muturi announced that during an event held at Kanyuombora Grounds, Newton Kariuki — known as Newton Karish — was endorsed as the DP flag bearer.

Muturi praised Karish’s strong track record of service in Mumenji Ward, underscoring his deep roots in the community.

“After a spirit-filled service at ACK St John’s Kanyuombora this morning, we proceeded to Kanyuombora Grounds for a momentous occasion. Together with Hon. Lenny Kivuti and a host of other leaders, I was proud to unveil Hon. Newton Kariuki (popularly known as Newton Karish) as the Democratic Party’s official candidate for the upcoming Mbeere North by-election,” Muturi said.

“Karish is no stranger to service; his leadership in Mumenji speaks for itself. He is a dedicated son of Mbeere, grounded in our values and committed to championing the aspirations of our people.”

The former Attorney General further stressed the importance of unity, organisation, and delivering leadership that reflects the will of the people.

“The journey ahead is clear: we must unite, organise, and deliver leadership that truly reflects the will of the people. The Democratic Party is ready, and Mbeere North is rising,” he added.

The Mbeere North parliamentary seat became vacant following Ruku’s appointment to the Cabinet by President William Ruto.

The date of the byelection is yet to be declared, but is expected soon once the chairperson and commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission are sworn in.

Several candidates have expressed interest in vying for the seat, although official campaigns for the by-election have yet to begin.
