Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has revealed ongoing plans to have the only cancer center that will serve residents of Kakamega County and the larger western region.

Barasa noted that this initiative forms part of the efforts to ensure residents have access to affordable and reliable healthcare.

“Through our efforts, I recently had a meeting with Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and we agreed to have a cancer center at the Kakamega Teaching and referral hospital," Barasa said.

Barasa was speaking when he hosted President William Ruto for a church service at Kivaywa High School in Lugari constituency.

He further acknowledged efforts by the national government and county government to ensure the facility which has since stalled is completed.

“We had further deliberations with the CS in charge of Defense and Soipan Tuya where we agreed that the Kenya Defense Forces will be completing the remaining phases of the hospital,” he said.

This comes a few days after the leadership from KDF visited the facility and assessed the status of works and amount required to complete the facility.

Recently, President Ruto directed allocation of Sh200million towards completion of the facility which was to be done by June 2018.

According to documents tabled in the county assembly, phase (I )was to be completed in June 2018 but the completion was extended to December,31,2020.

The contract sum for construction of the level (VI) hospital was Sh6.12billion and was to be done in three phases with Phase I at Sh2.33billion, phase II Sh2.01billion and phase III Sh1.78billion.
