In Summary
Nation Media Group PLC (NMG) has appointed Joseph Muganda as the new
Chairman of its Board of Directors, taking over from Dr. Wilfred Kiboro, who
will be retiring during the company’s Annual General Meeting slated for June
27, 2025.
The announcement was made by NMG Company
Secretary Angela Namwakira in a statement released Friday.
“The Board of Directors of Nation Media Group
PLC is pleased to announce that Mr. Joseph Muganda has been appointed to take
over the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nation Media Group PLC
from the long-serving Chairman, Dr. Wilfred Kiboro,” Namwakira stated.
Muganda joined the board on November 1, 2024,
and brings with him extensive experience spanning over three decades in
executive leadership across Africa and the UK.
He previously served as Group CEO of NMG from 2015 to 2018, and held top
roles at VIVO Energy Kenya, Kenya Breweries Limited, and British American
Tobacco.
“Muganda is an accomplished business leader
with an illustrious career and vast experience gathered from over three decades
of service,” Namwakira noted.
He currently chairs the Board of Stanbic Bank
Kenya and serves on several other corporate boards.
He holds an MBA from the University of Leicester and a B.Sc. in Accounting
and Financial Management from the University of Buckingham.
Dr. Kiboro will be stepping down after serving
as Chairman since 2009, and as a non-executive director since December 2006.
He first joined the Group in 1993 as
Managing Director of the Nation Newspapers Division and later became Group CEO
in 1995, a position he held for over a decade.
During his tenure, he spearheaded the
transformation of NMG from a single-market print media organisation into a
regional multi-platform media powerhouse with operations in Kenya, Uganda, and
Tanzania.
He also led the Group’s shift to digital media and the adoption of modern
newsroom practices.
“His time at NMG has been defined by his
steadfast commitment to media freedom, journalistic integrity, public interest
and organizational accountability,” Namwakira said.
“He also championed development of talent across the Group.”
As a staunch defender of editorial
independence, Dr. Kiboro emphasized the role of journalism in safeguarding
truth, ensuring that NMG’s content remained credible and guided by high ethical
standards.
“The Board, Management and Staff of Nation
Media Group PLC are grateful to Dr. Kiboro for his long and dedicated service,
commitment and contribution to the Group and wish him well in his retirement
and future endeavours,” the company said.
Muganda is expected to steer the board through the next phase of NMG’s
strategic evolution amid a dynamic media environment and changing consumer
behaviours.
