Three individuals suspected of involvement in a series of highway robberies have been arrested by detectives in Voi.
The arrests followed an investigation that included forensic analysis, which led officers to two of the suspects at a hideout in Taveta.
According to investigators, one of the suspects directed officers to a rented house in the Bahati area of Taveta subcounty, where a number plate linked to a reported stolen lorry was recovered.
A T-shaped screwdriver and two spanners were also retrieved at the scene.
The two suspects were presented before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Voi on May 19, 2025.
The court granted detectives a 14-day custodial order to continue their investigation.
A third suspect was arrested in Makindu on June 2, 2025, as the probe widened.
The suspect also appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Voi, where detectives secured another 14-day custodial order to pursue further leads and efforts to recover the missing lorry.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the arrests followed a robbery incident reported on April 9, 2025.
An Isuzu FRR truck was transporting gypsum from Nairobi to Mombasa when the incident occurred.
“As the vehicle approached the Ikanga area, one of the suspects dashed out from a nearby thicket, attempting to cross the road,” the DCI stated.
The truck swerved to avoid hitting the individual, veered off the road, and stalled.
The DCI further reported that a group of individuals then emerged, one of whom was allegedly armed, and took control of the vehicle.
The driver and co-driver were reportedly restrained and relocated from the scene before the truck was driven off in the direction of Mombasa.
Efforts to combat highway robberies along the Nairobi-Mombasa route remain ongoing, the DCI noted.
