The Wiper Democratic Movement has condemned an incident involving nominated MCA Jacinta Mwoni, who was reportedly assaulted during a funeral service in Kitui East constituency.
The party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, described the incident as an act of political intimidation and gender-based violence.
In a statement released on June 4, 2025, Wiper Secretary-General Shakila Abdalla said Mwoni was physically confronted by individuals allegedly linked to a rival political faction.
According to the statement, Mwoni was targeted after expressing support for Kalonzo Musyoka during the public event.
“The assault on Jacinta Mwoni is not just a criminal act; it reflects an alarming pattern of political intimidation and misogyny,” Abdalla said.
Wiper claimed that Mwoni had only voiced her political opinion, which provoked a response the party termed deliberate and reflective of broader challenges faced by women in politics.
“This was a message that when women speak out, they risk being silenced through violence,” Abdalla added.
The party referenced Article 33 of the Constitution of Kenya, which guarantees freedom of expression and political association, emphasising that Mweni was exercising her rights.
“This happened in broad daylight, at a public funeral, in front of voters and children,” Abdalla said.
Wiper called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The party further urged political leaders across the divide to denounce acts of violence, especially those targeting women.
A video circulating on social media shows four men approaching Mwoni as she concluded her tribute on June 1, 2025.
The footage captures the moment they took the microphone from her and pushed her, causing alarm among mourners.
The incident is reported to have occurred after Mwoni mentioned Kalonzo Musyoka’s name, a move believed to have triggered a reaction from some attendees.
The event has sparked public outrage, with women’s rights organisations, civil society groups, and human rights defenders demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.
“This was not just an assault on a county leader; it was an attack on democracy and free speech,” said a statement from the Gender Watch Alliance.
