Five individuals, including the bodyguard of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were, are set to be arraigned in court today to face charges in connection with the murder of the legislator.
This followed the approval by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for them to face charges.
MP Were was fatally shot on April 30, 2025, in a targeted attack near the City Mortuary roundabout.
The bodyguard, Allan Omondi Ogola, jumped out of the car as the gunman hopped onto a getaway motorcycle.
Witnesses said he chased the motorcycle for a short distance before he raced back to the car to join the driver and rushed the bleeding MP to the nearby Nairobi Hospital.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the bodyguard and four other suspects.
A JKIA court had allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain them for 30 days pending further investigations.
The upcoming court proceedings are anticipated to shed more light on the matter.
In another case, the High Court is slated to announce a decision on the bail application for four police officers charged with crimes against humanity, including the 2017 killing of six-month-old Samantha Pendo.
This follows the adjournment of the matter on May 28, 2025, after it emerged that crucial pre-bail and witness protection assessment reports were not yet ready.
Earlier, on May 12, Justice Margaret Waringa Muigai had directed the Probation Services at Milimani Law Courts to compile a pre-bail report for the accused officers.
Additionally, the court requested the Witness Protection Agency to submit an assessment evaluating potential risks to witnesses and victims.
The agencies requested additional time, citing the need for thorough assessments, and were initially granted a two-week extension.
While granting the extension, Justice Muigai maintained that the existing bail conditions, including restrictions on accessing certain areas in Kisumu County and contacting victims or witnesses, would remain in effect.
Baby Pendo died in 2017 after she was struck by a blunt object as police officers pursued protesters.
The reports are expected to guide the court in a decision to grant bail to the officers.
