President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga officially opened the Homa Bay modern fish market at the Koginga Pier in Homa Bay County. The facility is a key project under the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
It is designed to modernise the fishing sector and unlock economic potential in the region.
“The market features state-of-the-art facilities, including modern fish landing sheds, a communal kitchen and advanced cold storage units,” Ruto stated.
“This is not just a market. It is a new beginning for the people who depend on the lake for their livelihood.”
The facility is expected to serve about 2,000 fishmongers daily.
The initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses and improve hygiene standards in fish handling as the traders will now operate in a clean, organized, and efficient environment.
The county government of Homa Bay has also invested in supporting fish farming and cage fishing, where fishermen will be receiving gear and training to improve productivity.
Solar-powered preservation tools have been introduced to reduce spoilage to empower youths and women to participate more actively in the fishing economy.
“This is a major boost for our people. It will change lives,” Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said.
“The fish market is a catalyst for growth and job creation in the county.”
The project also marks a rare joint appearance by Ruto and Raila, underscoring its national unity.
