Double Tragedy: Two men found dead by suicide in separate incidents in Nyamira

Both men had previously threatened to take their own lives before the tragic incidents.

Police officers from Masaba North visited Bokanyibo Village, Regina Sub-location, following a report of a suspected suicide on May 27, 2025.

According to Acting Chief Charles Nyaunga of Regina Location, a lifeless body of George Marietha Onsongo, a 30-year-old male, was discovered hanging in a noose inside a one-bedroom house approximately 17 kilometres west of Gachuba Police Station.

The body showed no visible physical injuries, and no suicide note was found at the scene.

George Onsongo was last seen alive by his elder brother, Dennis Ndege Onsongo, aged 34, at 7:30 pm the previous day.

The deceased had reportedly threatened to take his own life following a domestic dispute with his wife, from whom he had recently separated.

The body was taken to Gucha Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy. The case has been classified as a Person Under Investigation (PUI), with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Masaba North handling the matter.

In another similar incident, Nyamira County — Stephen Onsongo Nyamieri, a 77-year-old former councillor, was found dead in an apparent suicide at his home in Rigomeru Village, Nyagwekoa Sub-location, Bomwagambo Location.

The incident was reported by Assistant Chief Peter Oyange of Nyambiri Sub-location.

Police officers led by OCS Nyamusi, accompanied by the Senior Community Chief Inspector Officer (SCCIO) of Nyamira North, visited the scene located about six kilometres west of Nyamira Police Station.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nyamieri hanged himself using a modified mosquito net attached to the rafter in his bedroom.

His son, Alex Teka, discovered the act and managed to cut the rope in an attempt to save him, but Nyamieri had already passed away.

Family members disclosed that Nyamieri had warned villagers days earlier about his intention to commit suicide, following the loss of his phone and being left with only SIM cards.

It was also revealed that he had attempted suicide two years ago but was rescued.

No suicide note was found at the scene.

The body was taken to Nyamira Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits an autopsy.
