Residents of Mukuru in Embakasi South broke into chants of “kumi bila break” as President William Ruto addressed them during his tour of the area on Tuesday.
In a show of solidarity and support for his re-election bid, the crowd enthusiastically chanted, “Miaka kumi, miaka kumi,” followed by the now-popular slogan, “Kumi bila break.”
President Ruto, engaging with the excited crowd, encouraged them to repeat the slogan.
“Ati mnasema?” he asked, prompting the crowd to echo, “Kumi bila break.”
The President was in Mukuru to officially hand over 1,080 housing units to beneficiaries of the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project.
The development, which spans 56 acres, is currently the largest affordable housing project in Kenya, with a total of 13,248 residential units planned.
The handover marks a major milestone in the government’s Affordable Housing Programme, which is a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura on Monday said the housing project will no longer be referred to as Mukuru slums but Mukuru Estate.
Mwaura said the housing project is part of the government’s promise of constructing at least 200,000 new houses every year over the next five years.
The aim is to shelter more than five million Kenyans and transform informal settlements into dignified communities.
"It is very cheap because we are talking about a unit going for as low as Sh3,900 for social housing. Sh3,900 per month is unbelievable, the other unit is going for Sh7,250 and Sh21,160 for the affordable middle class, so you can see people earning Sh20,000 or less can now own homes," Mwaura said.
The handover marks a significant milestone in the government’s ambitious plan to provide decent and affordable housing to millions of Kenyans.
