The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has initiated a thorough investigation into a violent incident that occurred during a raid at the home of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya by EACC officers on Monday.

DCI said the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers were unlawfully obstructed while carrying out their official duties in Trans Nzoia County.

Police said EACC officers were acting on duly obtained search warrants to investigate allegations of irregular procurement and fictitious payments amounting to Sh1.4 billion by the Trans Nzoia County Government that occurred during the financial years 2022-23 and 2024-25.

“The searches targeted the residence and office of Governor George Natembeya, along with four other individuals implicated in the case,” DCI said in a statement on Monday.

According to police, the search at Natembeya’s residence was conducted in the presence of family members, the county attorney, and legal representatives.

However, the operation was disrupted when a hostile group of individuals forcibly entered the premises, overpowering the security personnel assigned to safeguard the operation.

Police allege that the group unleashed chaos, maliciously damaging five EACC vehicles and stealing seized items and other valuables from the vehicles.

“The attack is a blatant attempt to undermine the rule of law and obstruct justice. The DCI has launched investigations to identify and bring to book the perpetrators behind this attack,” the statement read.

Armed police officers raided Natembeya’s Milimani home in Kitale on Monday morning, prompting drama at the residence.

The officers were backed by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers from Nairobi who had arrived for a search.

The DAP-K party had posted a message on its social media about the incident, claiming that they were aware of the planned raid.

“A heavy contingent of police officers in plain clothes, well-masked, have gained access to Governor George Natembeya’s Milimani home in Kitale. Such Moi tactics won’t work in current times. Stop using security apparatus to settle political scores,” the party stated.

It added that the weaponisation of independent offices to frustrate and humiliate those with alternative political stands shall be met with full resistance by the people.

“The plans to arrest Governor George Natembeya over his people-centric stance under TAWE movement shall not be allowed,” the post added.
