The government has secured a US visa for a Kenyan referee called up to officiate at the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe, an elite FIFA-accredited football referee, has successfully secured a visa to the United States, thanks to swift and coordinated government intervention.

He is now set to officiate at the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in the U.S. from 14th June to 13th July.

Yiembe’s selection is a milestone achievement.

He is one of only eight African match officials appointed to the tournament, and the sole representative from Central and Eastern Africa.

This has been hailed as a feat that not only underscores his personal excellence but also shines a spotlight on Kenya’s growing influence in international football.

Yet this remarkable journey nearly stalled when he faced difficulties obtaining a visa from the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.

Refusing to give up, Yiembe sought help from the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF)—a move that triggered a rapid and effective government response.

The chain of support began with YEDF CEO Josiah Moriasi, who escalated the matter to Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi.

Recognising the urgency and significance, PS Mwangi reached out to Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr. Korir Sing’oei, who immediately intervened.

In under 24 hours, Yiembe had his visa in hand — a testament to the government’s dedication to uplifting young talent.

“I am truly grateful for the government’s quick and decisive intervention,” said Yiembe after receiving his visa.

“This experience proves that young people are not alone in their journeys. I urge fellow youth to visit any government office when facing challenges — there will always be someone willing to guide or support you.”

Yiembe began his refereeing career in 2014 and earned his FIFA accreditation in 2018.

Since then, he has officiated in top-tier regional and continental tournaments, including the CAF Confederation League, CAF Confederation Cup, and most recently, the Paris 2024 Olympics.

His journey is more than a personal success story — it is a powerful example of what is possible when government institutions actively and efficiently support the dreams of young Kenyans.

Yiembe is preparing to take his place among the world’s best as he vowed to carry with him the pride of a nation and the evidence that a responsive government can be a true partner in the aspirations of its youth.
