Kenya recorded a significant decline in monthly hotel room occupancy rates from September to December 2024, a report has found.

According to the Economic Survey 2025, the hotel room occupancy rate for 2024 consistently decreased compared to the peak occupancy recorded in 2023 during the same four-month period.

The room occupancy for the four months in 2024 dropped by 5.4 per cent compared to the rates recorded in the same months of 2023.

“In 2023, the recorded rates were: 30.3 per cent, 32.3 per cent, 38.6 per cent, 34.4 per cent, and 29.4 per cent for the last four consecutive months of the year, respectively,” the report stated.

“Subsequently, the 2024 rates recorded were: 25.6 per cent, 31.1 per cent, 27.9 per cent, and 29.4 per cent for the last four months of the year, respectively.”

On the other hand, the hotel room occupancy peak for 2024 was recorded in February at 33.4 per cent, while for 2023, it was recorded in November at 38.6 per cent.

On April 2, 2024, Kenya dropped to seventh position in Africa among countries with the highest number of hotel rooms under development by international hotel chains.

A survey showed that the country dropped two positions from fifth place in 2023.
