Lamu County Woman Representative Marubu Muthoni excited mourners at the funeral of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were after saying that she was open to marrying one of Were's sons.
While addressing the mourners on Friday, Muthoni said the late Were had told her that he had two sons who were almost her age.
“Ong’ondo Were alikuwa amenionesha ako na vijana wawili ambao ni karibu rika yangu. Baba (Raila Odinga) unaona mkono wangu sijaweka pete. Ukituma kijana wa Were Bunge, mimi mwenyewe Muthoni nitamuonesha,” she said.
This loosely translates to, “Were had shown me that he was with two young men who were about my age. Baba (Raila Odinga), you see that I have not put a ring on my hand. If you send Were’s son to Parliament, I will show him.”
Following her remarks, mourners burst into laughter as she walked off the podium.
The legislator also said the late Were was a man who valued his family.
She further described him as a man who always supported women's affairs.
“To the family, the two ladies I served with Were, and he loved you two and your children so much. He was a defender of women. he once asked me, ‘Kama mwanume anapenda mwanamke mbona asimuoe amfanye side chic?’ (If a man loves a woman, why make her side chic instead of marrying her?) Muthoni said.
Were was gunned down in Nairobi on April 30 by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle near the City Mortuary roundabout at around 7:30 p.m.
In what now appears to be a chilling premonition, the MP had appealed to security agencies to protect him, stating that he was being trailed.
The National Police Service said the fatal shooting of the Kasipul Member of Parliament appears to have been both “targeted and predetermined”.
As of Thursday, 10 suspects were in custody, while others are still believed to be at large.
The gun used to shoot the MP five times was also recovered.
