The US Embassy has condemned attempts by senior officials to silence or censor journalists.
In a video post on X, Charge de'affaires Marc Dillard underscored the significance of journalists in a democratic society.
Dillard stated that by holding those in power accountable for their actions, journalists play a vital role in protecting democracy.
He stated that the freedom of journalists was significant as they act as a crucial link between citizens and the government.
"By asking questions and holding those in power accountable, journalists play a vital role in protecting democracy. Sometimes the media's work makes officials, including me, uncomfortable, but even with that, I know their work isn't invaluable," Dillard stated.
"We oppose efforts to silence or censor journalists. And this World Press Freedom Day, as journalists face censorship and threats, the US embassy celebrates the value of a free press that tells the truth boldly."
Dillard's sentiments come at a time when journalists are facing several challenges, including harassment and intimidation.
The recent incident was that of Kitui-based journalist Emmanuel Maleve, who had allegedly been arrested.
Reports claimed that Maleve's alleged arrest arose from a report he published.
While condemning the incident, the Media Council of Kenya asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Inspector General of police to investigate the circumstances which led to the alleged arrest of Maleve.
In a statement on Friday, MCK CEO David Omwoyo said Maleve's alleged arrest points to "unclear directives".
"The circumstances surrounding Maleve's arrest remain opaque. No official statements were recorded at either the Kitui police station or the local DCI offices, raising serious questions about the legality and transparency of the process," Omwoyo said.
He expressed "deep concern" over the development, saying Maleve's rights appear to have been violated through the arbitrary and unprocedural arrest.
Omwoyo said this amounts to intimidation and harassment of an accredited journalist.
"This action presents a troubling attack on press freedom, particularly as it coincides with the global observance of World Press Freedom Day 2025, a time dedicated to reaffirming the vital role of free and independent media and the obligation of governments to uphold this freedom," he said.
