Forum for African Women Educationalists Kenya Chapter (FAWEK) has called for concerted efforts to empower the girl child through education.
The women's lobby, which was marking the International Day of the Girl Child, said governments, civil society, and the private sector need to join hands in investing in the future of girls.
FAWEK CEO Jeanette Nyanjom said the International Day of the Girl Child is a reminder that empowering girls is not just about equity but a cornerstone of sustainable development.
“Girls who are educated and equipped with skills for the future are more likely to lift themselves and their families out of poverty, advocate for their rights, and drive social and economic progress in their communities,” she said.
International Day of the Girl Child is observed on October 11 every year as a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the unique challenges girls face worldwide and promoting their empowerment.
The 2024 theme is “Girls' Vision for the Future,” which is a call for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls' voices and vision for the future.
FAWEK’s vision is to have a just and inclusive society where gender parity and equality in education and training prevail.
"Nyanjom added that the International Day of the Girl Child is a pivotal moment to amplify the voices of young girls around the world and to highlight the challenges they face. “
"At FAWE Kenya, we recognise that girls are not just passive recipients of support—they are leaders in their own right, with the power to shape the future,” she said.
She added that it is time to listen to the voices of girls, to hear their vision for the future, and to take action to support them.
“Today’s girls are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but also hopeful and driven. With the right support, their potential is limitless.”
