From beach cleanups to tree-planting initiatives, these activities cultivate a sense of ownership and pride in safeguarding the environment. Organisations like the Scouts, 4-H and local environmental nonprofits offer excellent opportunities for young people to get involved.
We must also amplify the voices of youth activists. Greta Thunberg's Fridays for Future movement has inspired millions of students worldwide to take to the streets and demand climate action from their leaders. By uplifting these passionate changemakers, we empower the next generation to use their collective power to drive real policy change.
Perhaps most importantly, we need to lead by example. When young people see their parents, teachers, and community leaders modelling sustainable behaviours – whether it's recycling, reducing energy use, or making environmentally-conscious consumer choices – it normalises these practices and encourages them to do the same.
The challenges facing our planet can feel daunting, but by investing in the environmental education and activism of the younger generation, we can cultivate a future of engaged, empowered stewards ready to tackle these critical issues head-on. The time to start is now.
