Two people have been shot dead while scores sustained bullet injuries during anti-government demonstrations in Kibwezi, Makueni County.
The duo, both men, are alleged to have been shot by police officers who were quelling the demonstrators on Mjini Road within Kibwezi Township on Tuesday.
Sources told the Star that at least five other protesters sustained bullet wounds and are currently undergoing treatment at the Amref Kibwezi hospital within the Kibwezi subcounty.
"Other protesters rushed the two to Amref Kibwezi hospital after they were shot by the officers only to be informed that the victims were already dead," an eye witness told the Star by phone on Tuesday.
The shootings are said to have happened at around 3.00 pm.
It's said that agitated protesters moved the bodies on hospital stretchers to the Kibwezi police station in protests.
Upon reaching the station's main entrance, they were reportedly repulsed by police officers who shot in the air.
Teargas canisters were also reportedly used to disperse the demonstrations.
They abandoned the bodies at the entrance of the police stations lying on the Level 4 hospital's stretchers.
Eyewitnesses told the Star that the bodies were later loaded by the officers into their vehicles parked inside the police station.
The bodies were reportedly still inside the vehicles by press time.
Elsewhere in Kitengela, Kajiado County, another person was allegedly shot dead by police officers who were responding to the demonstrations in the area.
