KMFRI hosts major conference on blue economy and aquatic resources in Kisumu

The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is set to host the Sustainable Blue Economy and Aquatic Resources in Kisumu from June 17 to 21, 2024.

Themed “Science-Driven Stewardship for a Sustainable Blue Economy,” the event will bring together leaders, researchers, industry experts, and stakeholders from various fields including marine biology, oceanography, environmental science, and the blue economy.

The conference will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the development of sustainable practices to advance the blue economy.

Kenya’s Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyong’o, and Fisheries Principal Secretary Madam Betsy Njagi are among the high-profile leaders expected to grace the event.

According to Dr Chrispine Nyamweya Assistant Director of Limnology, key discussions at the conference will include interdisciplinary research, the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems, community engagement, technology and innovation, policy and governance, and capacity building.

Dr Nyamweya a senior researcher and ARBEC II Coordinator noted that the session on interdisciplinary research will explore cutting-edge research at the intersection of marine biology, oceanography, environmental science, and economics.

This, he said will foster collaboration between scientists, academics, and industry experts to address complex challenges facing aquatic ecosystems and the blue economy.

Another focal point of discussion will be Climate change and its impact on aquatic ecosystems which will examine cross-cutting issues that require integrated solutions. Strategies to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change on marine environments and associated communities will be discussed.

"The importance of community engagement and inclusivity will be emphasized, ensuring local communities' participation in the stewardship of aquatic resources. Inclusive and community-driven approaches to sustainable blue economy initiatives will be explored".

The conference will also showcase innovative technologies and solutions that leverage scientific advancements for sustainable resource management, fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime activities.

The event will also discuss the role of data analytics, remote sensing, and emerging technologies in enhancing our understanding of aquatic environments.

Different speakers will also address the development and implementation of science-informed policies and governance frameworks that promote responsible resource utilisation and conservation.

International collaborations and agreements that support the sustainable management of shared aquatic resources will also highlighted.

Capacity-building initiatives, including education and training programs to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable blue economy practices, will be another key topic during the conference.

"ARBEC II 2024 is not just a conference; it is a collective commitment to addressing critical issues affecting our oceans, lakes, and waterways. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation demand innovative and science-driven solutions".

He added that the government envisions the commercialization of Kenya’s enormous blue economy resources to benefit Kenyans by creating strategic national systems to ensure sustainable management of these resources, generate investments, create jobs, increase revenues, and improve local livelihoods.

"Realizing this noble goal will require concerted efforts from all stakeholders to boost the gains of the blue economy sector".
