Former Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Martin Kimani has said he is proud to have served Kenya.

Ambassador Kimani has served in diplomacy for 12 years.

He was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and later retained by President William Ruto.

"Today, I end my term as Kenya's Permanent Representative after 1,257 days. I was honored by former President Uhuru Kenyatta's appointment and retention by President William Ruto," he said.

"I'm proud to have served Kenyans for 12 years in diplomacy, counter-terrorism, regional security and mediation."

His exit follows Ruto's nomination of former Turkana County Assembly Speaker Erastus Lokaale to serve in the role.

Kimani has since December 2020 been Kenya's permanent representative to the United Nations.

He was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kimani has previously served as the Director of the National Counter Terrorism Centre and as a Special Envoy for Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya.

He also had prior engagements with the UN, serving at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

Kimani is remembered for the speech he made at the UN Security Council on February 22, 2022, where he compared the boundaries of Europe and Africa and criticized Russia for recognising separatist-held regions of Ukraine.

This earned him the attention of local and international media.

In the changes announced in March, Ruto made 43 other nominations and appointments to various diplomatic missions across the world.
