A police officer attached to the Eldoret Central police station was found dead in a trench near the station Sunday night.

Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwanthi says they are investigating the circumstances under which the officer died.

He however noted that the officer had been suffering from an underlying condition for some time.

The officer had been on duty last night at the station and it is suspected that he collapsed while on his way to his house located at the AP camp about a kilometre away.

He collapsed and fell into the trench along the road outside the police lines.

"We are investigating circumstances under which he died but he had been sick with an underlying condition," said Mwanthi.

His body was found in full uniform and police retrieved it to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.
