One person has been killed by floods while over 1,000 households have been displaced  in Nyanza.

Regional Commissioner  Flora Mworoa said Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Siaya were the counties are the most affected. Nyamira and Kisii have not reported any floods.

Mworoa told the media in Kisumu that 6,302 people had been affected by the floods.

"This is the number of people who have not been displaced but affected by the raging waters from where they are across the region in one way or another," she said.

The most affected subcounties are Nyando, Kadibo and Nyatike.

"The affected families are camping in schools, which is a very bad situation because they have to live with the learners," Mworoa said.

She confirmed that one person died due to the ragging floods within Kisumu.

With more rains expected across the region, the administrator appealed to residents living near river banks to move to higher and safer grounds. River Nyando broke its banks on Monday.

"We want to appeal to locals, those living within areas of the burst banks of the rivers, to move to safe grounds," she said.

The government is making arrangements to distribute food and non-food items to the displaced persons.

Mworoa said the state is working with the Kenya Red Cross to help the affected families.

"We also have the Western Hub, which is an organisation of various NGOs that work on providing aid to affected families. We have a collaboration with them among others such as Nema and the county government to address this issue".

The victims of floods in Kisumu called on the government to consider constructing dams as a long-term measure.

Luke Khaemba, a resident of Ahero, called for a permanent solution after their houses wwere flooded.

“The water has gone with everything. We don’t know how things are going to be now. We have children who have not eaten anything from morning to evening and nobody has come to our rescue,” Khaemba said.
