Trans Nzoia launches free milk program for ECDE centres

ECDE learners in Trans Nzoia are set to get free milk following the launch of free milk.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Tuesday launched the program which will see learners get free milk twice a week.

“Today, we officially launched a two-day per week free milk program for 41,000 pupils in our county’s Early Childhood Development Centers,” he said.

The governor noted that the program aims to invigorate pupils' morale to study, enrich them with nutritional value and create market opportunities for our dairy farmers.

Trans Nzoia now joins various counties with school feeding programmes for children.

Last month, Busia county launched its ECDE school feeding programme to improve nutrition among children and increase enrolment as well as retention of learners in schools.

Governor  Paul Otuoma said that the county government has set aside Sh30 million for the programme within this financial year.

Murang’a launched its School Feeding Programme last year in July.

President William Ruto graced the event and served the children with tea and a banana on the side.

The Isiolo government also launched a school feeding programme targeting 165 ECDE centres early this year

Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo said children in these centres will be getting a cup of porridge daily.

The Sh7 million initiative is aimed at addressing hunger, and malnutrition and enhancing school attendance.

The nutritious porridge will contain sugar, corn, soybeans, fortified vitamins and minerals.

In Nairobi, Governor Johnson Sakaja also launched the Dishi na county feeding programme last year where guardians/ parents are only required to pay Sh5 per learner daily, with the remainder of the costs being covered by the county government.
