Tuesday

President Ruto on Tuesday took a strong stance against alcoholism, emphasising the need for a shift in focus from drinking to productive endeavors among the youth.

While at State House, Ruto stated that a country cannot move forward with the culture of drinking.

He said that instead of drinking, youths should channel their energy into working.

"We are intentional on dealing with those who want to corrupt our young people with drugs and illicit brews. We have put down our foot that it cannot be business as usual. We cannot have a drinking nation, we must have a working nation," Ruto said.

The government through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration recently announced 25 measures to curb illicit brew, drug, and substance abuse in the country.

As part of the measures, the government suspended licences for all manufacturers of second-generation alcohol.

They will have to apply afresh for the license and all existing valid licences will be vetted afresh

Also as part of the measures, there is the closure of bars and clubs within the residential estates and learning institutions.

On the same day, the President told all government businesses to give 80 percent of their profits to the national treasury to help with money. He also stated that these businesses should spend 30 percent less on regular costs.

Regulatory institutions were also ordered to remit 90 percent of their surplus funds to the Treasury.

The Head of State stressed the importance of funds belonging to the people of Kenya and the necessity to eliminate loss-making entities.

“The money some parastatals make does not belong to their boards or management. It belongs to the people of Kenya as return on investment. We have to shut down some of those loss-making parastatals. We must end excess capacity,” Ruto said.

Later in the evening, the Head of State presided over the opening of the JW Marriott Nairobi.

The President described the JW Marriott hotel chain as an iconic and award-winning multinational hotel.

"It can only get better! The Global Trade Centre, Nairobi, officially opened the JW Marriott Nairobi which will directly employ more than 500 Kenyans," he said.
