Kenya Railways has said the Standard Gauge Railway to the Meter Gauge Railway (SGR-MGR) link project in Mombasa will be completed by May 31.

"The entire Link line is 17 kilometres," Kenya Railways said on X

According to Kenya Railways, the project includes the construction of new MGR passenger stations at Mombasa Terminus, Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi and the Mombasa Central station.

The railroad line construction between Mombasa CBD and Mombasa Terminus will soon provide commuter train travel for the people living in Miritini, Changamwe, and the surrounding areas.

Through this project, travellers who wish to utilize the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will travel by rail from the Old Mombasa station in Miritini to Mombasa Terminus by Mijikenda Road.

The Mombasa Terminus commuter train in Miritini will also transport passengers from Nairobi and other counties crossed by the Standard Gauge Railway line to the Mombasa Central Business District.

"The project route entails the construction of a Meter Gauge Railway link of length 2.772km, from Mombasa SGR Terminus to newly constructed Miritini MGR passenger station," Kenya Railways said in September last year.

"The project also includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge linking the SGR and MGR platforms, a locomotive turntable and a railway bridge of length 480m across the Makupa Causeway."

On Sunday, Kenya Railways chairman Abdi Bare Duale inspected the ongoing construction of the link.

He was accompanied by the Kenya Railways managing director, Philip Mainga and other delegates.

The visit, according to Kenya Railways, involved the inspections of the Mombasa Central Station, the Makupa Railway Bridge, and the Miritini Station along Mijikenda Road.

The project will build stations at Shimanzi, Changamwe East, and Changamwe West, as well as the Mombasa MGR station, which includes the regional office.

The MGR line from Mombasa Island to Miritini will also be renovated.

"Once complete, the Link will enable passengers to travel between Mombasa Central Railway station at the CBD and Mombasa Terminus in Miritini with ease," Kenya Railways noted.
