A sub-county commissioner, accused of stealing and selling relief food to Tana North residents is being arraigned before Garissa's anti-corruption court.
According to Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the commissioner is accused of stealing relief food during the COVID-19 era in 2020.
He is reported to have sold the food, which was meant to be distributed for free to the needy residents of the area.
The relief food is valued at Sh550,200.
"The Commission established that the Assistant County Commissioner stole and sold 105 bags of rice and 1 bag of beans cumulatively valued at Sh550,200," EACC said in an earlier update on the case.
According to the Commission, the investigation into the case began in April 2020 and the arrest was made on Wednesday.
"Investigations commenced in April 2020 when the Commission received allegations that 300 bags of relief food belonging to Tana North Sub-County within Tana-River County had been stolen."
Relief food is usually provided by the government to citizens affected by disasters in the country.
Senior authorities in charge of the National Government Administration are often in charge of distributing relief supplies and food.
