ODM-nominated Senator Crystal Asige has sought answers regarding discrepancies depicted in the recently released KCPE results.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, Asige tasked the Education Committee to establish key issues of concern from the results announced.

"Provide comprehensive data on all instances of erroneous marking and grading of candidates from the KCPE results," she noted.

"Specifically address cases where incorrect marking was awarded, wrong subjects graded and questionable results published."

Asige at the same time wanted to know whether KNEC has looked into each issue raised concerning erroneous marking and grading.

"Explain why there were discrepancies in marks received by candidates on the KNEC portal and the SMS service provider detailing to the Senate what caused the error and what has been done to address it," she added.

The Senator also wants an explanation of why some candidates received marks for subjects they did not sit for which has since been explained by KNEC as a misalignment.

"Explains steps to be taken to address the issue ahead of the marking KCSE exams," she said.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and KNEC CEO David Njeng'ere were to appear before the Education Committee of the National Assembly to answer questions on the results on Thursday but they failed.

Several questions have been raised about the results released recently with several students and schools rejecting the outcome.

Parents and guardians of Kitengela International School and Kisii's Set Greenhill Academy Mixed and Boarding Junior School 2023 KCPE candidates have, for instance, sued KNEC over the KCPE results.

The two have moved to the High Court seeking orders to stop KNEC and the Ministry of Education from beginning the Form One selection exercise until the petitions are heard and determined.

The parents disputed the results released on Thursday claiming that there were errors in the grading system.

Pius Kiio of Kitengela International who is representing his child stated that the school had in the last three years produced good results and it was difficult to now comprehend how this year's results had variances.

Through Lawyer Danstan Omari, Kiio said the 2023 results "did not fall within a reasonable range".

At the same time, Evelyne Kemuma of Set Greenhill Academy expressed her dissatisfaction with how her child's exam papers were marked and the rushed release of the results.

She told the court that her child has had mental stress and torture owing to the grade and marks she was awarded in the national examination.
