Azimio leader Raila Odinga has criticised the government over irregularities that were noted in some of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination results released Thursday last week.

The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) acknowledged the irregularities saying some 133 candidates received the wrong results.

CEO David Njegere said some candidates had their Kiswahili marks realigned to Kenyan Sign Language yet they never wrote the paper.

A school in Isiolo also had several candidates score 75 marks on the Science paper, something Njegere said was not a result of cheating.

But Raila on Monday said the exam results are nothing short of scandalous as there is no way different candidates can score similar points in a subject unless cheating was involved.

"Look at the examination, you have all seen the scandal it is. That students in the same class get similar marks in a subject, there is no bright or weak student," he said.

"What type of an exam is that? That is a Ruto and Gachagua exam."

The opposition chief was speaking on Monday in Kisumu County during a recruitment drive for the ODM party.

"They told us there are no fools in Kenya. They should know that Kenyans indeed can't be fooled," Raila said.

Isiolo's Brainstar Schools' results circulated on social media forums showed that most of the candidates attained 75 marks in Science.

In a statement on Saturday, Njegere ruled out cheating in the phenomenon saying Science is a multiple-choice question paper thus making it possible for the candidates to get identical marks.

He said although the incident may be assumed to be an examination irregularity, it is not adequate evidence for Knec to sanction the results for candidates without a supporting report that cheating happened during the administration of the examination.

Further, he admitted that the council had received appeals from some affected schools on dissatisfaction with their results as received via SMS code 40054.

He, however, said the errors were only in the results received via SMS but those uploaded on the Knec portal were unaffected.

"These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately," he said.

While releasing the results at the new Mitihani House in South B, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said out of the 1.4 million candidates who sat the 2023 KCPE exam, only two students were involved in exam malpractice.

He said the two had unauthorised examination material during their tests.

"One of the candidates had a mobile phone while the other had notes during their test," he said.
