Most pedestrians died in road accidents in October – NTSA

Total number of accident victims for October stands at 1,880. In 2022, the number was 1,590.

Pedestrians recorded the highest number of fatalities in road accidents that occurred in October 2023.

According to NTSA data seen by the Star, pedestrians accounted for 129 deaths out of the 330  recorded.

"In October 2023, there were 330 fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes compared to 361 in October 2022," the authority said.

In the October Road Safety status report, Motorcyclists accounted for 91 deaths, passengers 41, pillion passengers 35, drivers 29 and pedal cyclists five deaths.

Overall, serious injuries increased to 903 cases compared to 730 in the same period last year.

Slight injuries also increased by 647 as compared to 499 cases recorded in 2022.

"There was an 8.59 per cent decrease in fatalities and serious and slight injuries increased by 23.7 per cent and 29.7 per cent respectively compared to a similar period in 2022," NTSA said.

The total number of accident victims for October stands at 1,880. In 2022, the number was 1,590.

"Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motorcyclists, pillion passenger and pedal cyclists) contributed to 78.8 per cent of all deaths in October 2023."

NTSA said the recorded increase in pillion passenger deaths is attributed to speeding vehicles and motorcycles, dangerous cycling, unsafe changing of lanes and distracted riding.

They also attributed the use of mobile phones by drivers and motorcyclists and other forms of distraction, as well as failure to wear reflective jackets and helmets.
